A new Wave is Coming…
bringing the first Big Wave surf technology to the Pacific Northwest.
Barreled surf park will make the joy of surfing more accessible letting surfers from beginner to expert enjoy a variety of wave options. From a slow rolling ‘Malibu’ longboard wave to a six-foot barrel with air sections, Barreled will have a wave for every skill level.
The perfect wave. Every time.
The cornerstone attraction at Barreled is a recent technological break-through in the surf park world and the gold standard of artificial wave technology – The WaveGarden Cove.
Whether you’re punting big air or paddling into your first solo wave, a ride at Barreled will be one for the memory bank; and with a wave capacity of ~600 waves/hour means there will be plenty of waves to go around.
The Cove is accessible to all skill levels!
Beginners will learn the basics on a foam board in a safe, controlled setting leading up to catching their first waves
Advanced surfer will be found riding the reef break, facing a variety of wave options to better their turning, barrel-riding, or airs
the park
The park & The mission.
Barreled Surf Park aims to be a key part of the Yakima community and the broader Pacific Northwest. Our goal is to introduce the region to surfing, providing an opportunity to access a sport once reserved for postcards and documentaries. Surfing has a way of broadening one’s horizons and sense of adventure and we hope to be the first stepping stone while, unmistakably, knowing you’re in Yakima. From architecture to offerings, we will show off this special valley we call home - all while learning a skill that can be used around the globe.
The safest place to learn to surf
With no natural environmental factors and lifeguards on duty at all times, it is the perfect surf spot for the whole family, with progression and growth being key focus areas for the staff at Barreled.
Hourly reservations or classes with certified surf instructors will be available for all ages and skill levels to help surf dreams become reality. From ages 5 to 75, Barreled will have a wave for everyone!
Building community, one wave at a time.
Barreled will be a point of pride for the rural Central Washington community of Yakima, and we recognize that won’t occur without outreach from our end.
We will engage with our local community through after school programs and summer camps to get kids outside and exposed to this previously unavailable recreational sport.
By building our foundation around local kids and families, Barreled will be more than just a recreational stop-over, it will be THE summer hangout for the Yakima Valley – where people gather to eat great food, listen to great music, and enjoy great surfing.
Our focus on the local community is to foster a positive, inclusive atmosphere welcoming those from near and far, creating an environment everyone wants to be a part of.
the plan
Here’s the scoop.
Barreled has acquired 80 acres, located 15 minutes east of Yakima, WA in the hills of the Yakima Ridge - Deep in rural country. Barreled will provide a unique surf environment surrounded by the golden hills and orchards of the Yakima Valley, complete with a spectacular view of Mt. Adams standing prominently to the southwest.
We intentionally selected a location with an atmosphere impossible to replicate. Even Barreled’s operating season, from April 1-October 31, reflects the ebb and flow of the surrounding agriculture operations. Visitors to the Barreled Surf Park will have no doubt that they are in the heart of agricultural Washington.
In the yakima valley, water is a primary concern
Barreled has partnered with a local farmer to halt the growing of 13.5 acres to accommodate for the consumptive water of our surf park.
Included in our proposal is retaining the water in the WaveGarden Cove over the winter, meaning once we’ve filled the pool first time, excluding any unforeseen circumstances, we should only need to top off for evaporation and small amounts of usage loss.
We are committed to using our water as efficiently as possible on the grounds with water-wise landscaping, water-efficient toilets and timed faucets and showers. We understand how valuable our precious resource is, and the importance to the broader Yakima Valley, so our design principles prioritize water efficacy.
Our proposal has been reviewed and accepted by the Washington State Department of Ecology.
Besides the water, we understand there are other concerns from the local neighborhood including light, noise, and traffic. With those issues in mind, we designed the park to minimize our impact.
First, we moved the park to the Eastern edge of our property, creating a quarter of a mile buffer between our development and our own property line. That distance will eliminate most noise issues, especially because The wave machine only creates 75 decibels of noise - the same as a vacuum cleaner. To offset any concerns about light, our design principles are aimed at qualifying for the dark-sky association.
Finally, Traffic. Yes, the park will draw additional cars on the rural collectors that lead to the park. However, we have conducted a traffic study, based on expected attendance, which found no drop in Service to the roads and intersections in question. This means, although more cars are on the road, the existing infrastructure can Accommodate. It is important to note that the WaveGarden Cove has a maximum capacity of 100 people/hour. This Capacity Constraint, combined with our hourly reservation system, is expected to dissipate demand across the day.
By highlighting the amazing surroundings that drew many to the Saint Hilaire neighborhood, as opposed to infringing upon them, we hope to be good neighbors. It’s important to us.
the amenities
barn entrance
As an ode to our surroundings, we’ve designed Barreled with a rural theme, so what better way to make an entrance then through our very own Surf Barn?
This single point of entry for the park will house ticket sales, ranging from single hour to multi-day packages, and our merchandise store where you can pick up a keepsake from your visit or rep your Barreled “Regular” status.
Visitors will also be able to browse the surf shop to satisfy their surf-specific needs, such as wax, leashes, or even a brand-new board. Board rentals will also be available in the Surf Barn for those new to the sport or for anyone wanting to take a new size or shape for a test drive.
bar and restaurant
Sticking to our theme, our bar and restaurant area will be modeled after the roadside fruit stands commonly found east of the Cascades.
The restaurant will sit atop a knoll in the park, providing the best views of surfers and the beautiful surroundings from the outdoor patio. Our restaurant concept will be an elevated food-court, casual and laid-back.
With so much hustle and bustle at the park, we will offer flexibility and speed for our customers, while maintaining great quality.
